The psychology of security

Why schemes work even on attentive people: manipulation, social engineering, profiling and the psychology of the fraudster.

Behind the rational problems of nearly every audience sit five basic emotions: fear, distrust, uncertainty, helplessness and responsibility for others. That is exactly what the schemes work on.

The desk explains the mechanism of pressure and examines what actually returns control to a person: a pause, a second channel of contact, simply saying the situation out loud to someone else.

Core pain

«I knew something was wrong — and still kept talking».

Section rules

  • A pause is worth more than politeness. You always have the right to hang up, and it needs no explanation.
  • Verify through a second channel. A scheme lives in exactly one channel of contact — the one it chose itself.
  • Say it out loud to another person. A scheme put into words almost always sounds absurd — which is why isolation is part of the design.
  • Remember the sunk-cost effect: the more a person has already done at the fraudster's request, the harder it is to stop. Stopping is still the right move — losses are counted from the point where you stop.

Important

This desk does not diagnose anyone and does not replace work with a psychologist. It is an analysis of influence mechanisms, not therapy.
